What is a dental crown and when is it recommended?

A dental crown is an artificial cap that is designed to look like a natural tooth crown. It can be made of metal, porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal material. The artificial cap can be used to cover weak, damaged or severely misshapen natural tooth. It is recommended by our dental professional to cover a tooth under the following circumstances.

  • To cover a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment
  • To cover a tooth that is broken into pieces
  • To cover a weak tooth
  • To cover a tooth with a large filling
  • Fixed over a dental implant to replace a lost tooth

Dental crown restoration procedure

A dental crown is recommended to restore a weak or damaged tooth. Some portion of the enamel layer of tooth should be removed in order to create space for bonding the crown. This is called preparation of tooth. Local anesthesia is used for tooth preparation. Different types of dental instruments are used to remove some portion of enamel layer. Once the tooth is prepared, impressions are taken and a temporary acrylic crown is fabricated at our office. This crown remains bonded over the tooth until the next dental visit. Patients should take proper care of temporary crown in order to prevent it from breaking.

During the second visit, the temporary crown is removed and the tooth is cleaned. Our dentist checks the fit of permanent crown before permanently bonding it over the tooth. With proper care, crowns can last for about 5-8 years.
